How to Take a Passport Photo at Home
You can take your own passport photo with a phone or camera. The goal is a clear, recent, original image with a plain white or off-white background and even lighting.
Set up the shot
Stand several feet from the background to reduce shadows. Have the camera several feet away rather than using an extreme close-up. Face the camera directly with your head and shoulders centered and your entire head visible.
Use even lighting
Avoid strong overhead or side lighting that creates shadows. Make sure the image is neither very dark nor washed out, and use your camera's highest-quality setting.
Don't fix a bad photo with AI
If the background, lighting, or pose is wrong, retake the photo. State Department guidance says to submit an original, unchanged photo without filters, AI alterations, or digital changes.
